JAZZ

 
 

Our Jazz classes follow the Jazz Dance NZ syllabus, which is a technical based syllabus designed to create versatile dancers. This is a one of our most popular dance styles, offering classes from age 4 and upwards.

The JDNZ syllabus introduces elements of hip hop, soft shoe, contemporary, amongst other genres, through stylised routines, while the centre work includes balances, turns and elevation movements.

Jazz students have the opportunity to sit JDNZ exams in August of each year, however this is not necessary to progress through the grades.

The following is a rough age guide for our classes:

  • Pre-Beginners Jazz: 4.5 years

  • Beginners Jazz: 5 years (year 1 in school by end of year)

  • Pre-Junior Jazz: 6-7 years (year 2 in school)

  • Junior Jazz: 7-8 years (year 3 in school)

  • Pre Grade Jazz: 8-9 years (year 4 in school)

  • Grade 1 Jazz: 9 years (year 5 in school)

  • Students age 10+ should contact us for best class placement

LYRICAL

 
 

With a focus on fluent movement and musicality, our lyrical classes are becoming increasingly popular.

We follow the Jazz Dance NZ lyrical syllabus in these classes, using fluid motions and emotive music, encouraging expression from the dancers. In these classes, jazz technique is incorporated, alongside introducing dancers to leaps, turns, and use of the floor space.

Lyrical students have the opportunity to sit JDNZ assessments in August of each year, however this is not necessary to progress through the grades.

The following is a rough age guide for our classes:

  • Junior Gold Lyrical: year 4

  • Intermediate Bronze Lyrical: year 5

  • Intermediate Silver Lyrical: year 6

  • Intermediate Gold Lyrical: year 7

  • Senior Bronze Lyrical: year 8

  • Senior Silver Lyrical: year 9+

HIP HOP

Hip Hop is our more relaxed dance style on offer, which helps to build coordination and style.

Our classes follow the APDA ‘Urban Ignition’ syllabus, All work is progressive and designed to develop co-ordination, strength, agility and style. Freestyle and student choreography elements are included in the syllabus.

Hip Hop students have the opportunity to sit APDA examinations in August.

The following is a rough age guide for our classes:

  • Foundation Level: year 2

  • Level 1: year 3

  • Level 2: year 4

  • Level 3: year 5

  • Level 4: year 6-7

  • Level 6: year 8

  • Level 7: year 9+

ACRO DANCE

 
 

Added in 2021 are our popular Acro Dance Classes!

Using the Acrobatic Arts syllabus, students will learn safe techniques as the progress through the levels in 5 disciplines: Flexibility, Strength, Balancing, Limbering and Tumbling. Different from gymnastics, acro dance applies acrobatics to choreography, creating dynamic movements.

Acro classes are primarily based on ability and students will require an short assessment of skills to determine their level, however the following is a rough age guide for our classes:

  • Acro One: years 1 - 3

  • Acro Two: years 4-6

  • Acro Three: years 7+

PRESCHOOL DANCE

 
 

Our preschool classes are for 2-4 and are all about fun!

Through repetition of movements and songs, our preschool dancers are learning introductory dance techniques, such as skipping, gallops & rhythm, while enjoying independent and creative dance. We use a range of props to vary our classes and include all our favourite songs. Our preschoolers are included in our end of year concert too!
